Environmental Hope and Real Solutions

Posted on September 24, 2010

I have the impression that most people are used to thinking of our current environmental crisis as essentially hopeless. We recycle a bit, keep driving our big cars, and try to ignore the worst news to which solutions seem beyond our individual grasp.

I just watched an incredible documentary called The 11th Hour, produced and narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio (Warner, 2007) and featuring a plethora of noted scientists and activists presenting a compelling and cohesive manifesto on the complexities of environmental exploitation, pollution, climate change, health consequences, and more. The difference with this documentary is that it’s all about solutions, solutions for which we already have implementable technology. This is not theory, but existing science, staggered and blocked by corporate influence in governments and disinformation. These technologies used correctly can reduce our current global carbon output by 90%. Check it out at 11thhourfilm.com or awtch the entire film here:

The documentary was made in 2007, but if you watch the news today it still seems like little progress has been made.

There is a lot to be excited about, however. Change is happening – and in this spirit, I recommend The Great News Network for your daily dose of good news – and many articles on positive changes toward a healthy environment.
