To Choose Organic or Not?

Still not sure of the benefits of organic food choices? Or maybe you want to buy organic but don’t know where your priorities should lie? One of my biggest missions is to encourage organic eating as much as possible – while not creating fear or fanaticism. It is possible to find a comfortable balance; minimizing toxic chemical exposure, not blowing your budget, and enjoying choosing and preparing delicious food. Price and range of choice are often barriers to going all-organic. The situation is constantly improving with organic food prices dropping and the choices ever increasing. But how do you know what’s what? The Environmental Working Group website is one of my favorite sites. “The mission of the Environmental Working Group (EWG) is to use the power of public information to protect public health and the environment.” EWG is one of the best sources for up-to-date information on agri-chemical research, risks, and what you can do about it. The site can be a real eye-opener for those not yet convinced about the health and environmental impacts of the chemicals used in industrial farming. A great resource is the Dirty Dozen list of the 12 most contaminated foods that you definitely want to buy organic or perhaps avoid altogether. I also strongly suggest the full list which you can easily print and take shopping with you.
